Throughout this unit, standard geometric terms are introduced so that students will have a common vocabulary for discussing geometric shapes and ideas. The big ideas in this unit, however, are about geometric concepts, not vocabulary. Do not expect that students will become conversant with the geometric terms immediately after they are introduced—and do not delay your instruction of the lessons until students know the vocabulary. Students will more likely learn the proper terms only as they use them over and over again while investigating geometric concepts.
Several new geometry vocabulary words are introduced in this lesson. The following words will be added to the classroom Geometry Word Chart:
end point
intersect
line
line segment
parallel
perpendicular
