Lesson 8

Slides, Flips, and Turns

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

Play Where Is the Shape? Use a display of the Where Is the Shape? Master and the Power Polygons™ to play this game with the whole class. Place a polygon on the display. Trace it. Describe a transformation (flip, slide, or turn) and ask students to show where the shape will be by making a sketch on an index card or self-adhesive note. Alternatively, several copies of the master can be made and students can draw the shape's end position directly on the paper copy. See Figure 4 for some examples. Play this game with a few clues and different polygons.

Update Geometry Word Chart. Revisit the Geometry Word Chart the class created in Part 2. See Figure 3. Ask students if there are any other phrases or words they would like to add to the chart. Tell students to think back and look at all the examples of flips, slides, and turns they have explored in this lesson. In pairs, choose two words or phrases from the chart and make an example on an index card or large self-adhesive note. As students finish their examples they can then be displayed next to the corresponding words on the Geometry Word Chart.

Assess students' abilities to identify slides, flips, and turns of shapes [E9] using the Slides, Flips, and Turns Homework section in the Student Guide.

Targeted practice with this Expectation can be found in the Workshop in Lesson 11. The game Where Is the Shape? can provide targeted practice.
