TIMS Bit

Copy and prepare the Triangle Flash Cards: Square Numbers. After students sort the cards, encourage them to practice the facts in the last two piles—those facts they can figure out and those they need to learn. Discuss strategies students use to find the answers to the facts, emphasizing those strategies that are more efficient than others.

Encourage students to make a list of the facts they need to practice at home for homework as well as to update their Division Facts I Know charts. Remind students to bring home their Triangle Flash Cards for the square numbers.

Inform students when the quiz on the square numbers will be given. This quiz appears in item CC.

Ongoing Assessment

Have students record their progress on the division facts for the square numbers [E13] on their Facts I Know charts.

See the Letter Home for targeted practice ideas.

A. Triangle Flash Cards: Square Numbers

With a partner, use your Triangle Flash Cards to quiz each other on the division facts for the square numbers. One partner covers the corner containing the number in the circle. This covered number will be the answer to a division fact, called the quotient. The number in the square is the divisor. Use the two uncovered numbers to solve a division fact.

Separate the used cards into three piles: Facts I Know Quickly, Facts I Can Figure Out, Facts I Need to Learn. Make a list of those facts that are in the last two piles. Take the list home to practice.

There is no need to go through the cards a second time because the numbers are the same in both the circle and the square for the square numbers.

Circle the facts you know quickly on your Division Facts I Know chart.
