TIMS Task

This can be a Problem of the Week.

  1. 2/5 is 4 sections; 1/2 is 5 sections; 1/10 is 1 section. Possible response:

    R shows 2/5   B shows 1/2   Y shows 1/10
    2/5 + 1/2 + 1/10 = 1
  2. 1/4 is 3 sections; 1/4 is 3 sections; 1/6 is 2 sections; 1/3 is 4 sections.

    R shows 1/4 + 1/4
    B shows 1/6   Y shows 1/3
    1/4 + 1/4 + 1/6 + 1/3 = 1
  3. 2/3 is 10 sections; 1/3 is 5 sections

    R shows 2/3   Y shows 1/3
    2/3 + 1/3 = 1
  4. 1/2 is 10 sections; 1/5 is 4 sections; 1/10 is 2 sections.

    R shows 1/2   B shows 1/5
    Y shows 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10
    1/2 + 1/5 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 = 1

Part 2. Designs will vary.

D. The Whole Equals One

Part 1. Making Designs

Use colored pencils, markers, or crayons to make designs with fractions. You will need one or two sheets of Centimeter Grid Paper. Follow all the directions for each rectangle.

  • Draw each rectangle on Centimeter Grid Paper. The rectangle you draw is the whole.
  • Divide the rectangle into the fractional parts given.
  • Color different fractional parts with a different color. Color the same fractional parts with the same color.
  • Label each color with the correct fraction, either on the fractional part or in a color key.
  • Write a number sentence for each whole rectangle.

Rectangle A: 2 rows and 5 columns. Show 2/5, 1/2, 1/10 using 3 colors.

Rectangle B: 3 rows and 4 columns. Show 1/4, 1/4, 1/6, 1/3 using 3 colors.

Rectangle C: 5 rows and 3 columns. Show 2/3, 1/3 using 2 colors.

Rectangle D: 5 rows and 4 columns. Show 1/2, 1/5, 1/10 , 1/10 , 1/10 using 3 colors.

Part 2. Make a New Design

  1. Draw a rectangle with 4 rows and 6 columns.
  2. Find at least 4 different fractions that will fill the whole rectangle.
  3. Some of your fractions must have different denominators.
  4. Don't use any of the groups of fractions in Part 1.
  5. Label and color your fractional parts.
  6. Write a number sentence for your fraction design.
